Where is Rapids Jet?
Rapids Jet is situated in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand. Our operations base is sited in the Aratiatia Scenic Reserve, on the banks of the Waikato River.
Our visitor facilities are directly below Aratiatia Dam on Nga AwaPurua Road (off Rapids road, which is off Aratiatia road). Rapids Jet is conveniently located 15 minutes north of Taupo off State Highways 5, or just 50 minutes south of Rotorua off State Highway 5.
There is ample parking for all size vehicles, and the roads are all tar-sealed right to Rapids Jet's door. If you, or your group require transport, there is a fantastic shuttle service available from Taupo at a very reasonable price. Phil, owner of Shuttle 2 U can be contacted on freephone 0800 54 6628. The shuttle service is available for all Rapids Jet trips.
Visitors to Rapids Jet can also watch the Aratiatia Dam gates open from the bridge at the dam on Aratiatia Road. There are 3 look outs a short walk away, offering a total panoramic view of the Aratiatia Rapids. Then continue on to Rapids Road and view the Rapids from the Power House bridge.
The dam gates open every day at 10am, 12pm, 2pm,
with an extra opening at 4pm in summer, 1st Oct - 1st April.
Rapids Jet’s rides are scheduled to coincide with the release of water from the Aratiatia dam daily, and provide a truly spectacular way to see these amazing rapids up close. If your ride falls outside those times don’t worry, all that water will be in the rapids you are about to boat.
Rapids Jet Visitor Centre's Observation Deck offers yet a different panorama, and our river side areas offer a great, relaxing atmosphere for the weary traveler.
