Movie locations in Lake Taupo are world-famous. Central North Island has some of the best scenery in the world so not a surprise some of the Biggest Movies ever made came here to film. BIG and small Budget movies have taken advantage of our Taupo landscapes and chosen to film right here.
Lord of the Rings was filmed here in 2000. Mt Doom is actually our very own Mt Ngaurahoe. Tongariro National Park was also in the film. The home of some dude by the name of The Dark Lord of Souron. Mordor?!
Rapids Jet’s very own rapid also made a brief appearance in the Hobbit installment, the scene where the Dwarf’s escaped danger by hiding in Wine barrel’s and floating down the river.
